Robert J. Griffin, Sr. April 9, 1943 – January 16, 2003 COLUMBUS, GA Mr. Robert J. Griffin, Sr., 59, of 3536 St. Mary’s Road, Columbus, died Thursday in Naples, Fla. Memorial services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. today at the Chapel of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc., with a graveside service 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Green Acres Cemetery. The cortege will depart from 900 Woodpine Court (Brookstone Subdivision) Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. Born in Columbus, Ga., on April 9, 1943, Robert was a son of the late Percy Edward and Julia Kate Banks Griffin. A life-long resident of Columbus, he was a 1961 graduate of William H. Spencer High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Albany State University After 31 years of services to the Muscogee County School System, Robert retired having taught at Columbus Junior High School and Fort Middle School where he served as the Girls Basketball Coach. Robert was a Catholic, having attended Mother Mary Mission Catholic Church and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Sister Mary Julian Griffin and Percy E. Griffin, Jr. Surviving are a son, Robert J. Griffin, Jr., (Jennifer) of Naples; two grandchildren, Arianna L. and Robert J. Griffin, III, both of Naples; one brother, Thomas H. Griffin, Sr., (Doris) of Washington, D.C.; a sister-in-law, Shirley H. Griffin of Columbus; an aunt, Charlie M. Banks of Columbus; a devoted friend, Tami Lee of Columbus; six nephews, Percy E. Griffin, III of Tallahassee, Fla., Thomas H. Griffin, Jr., of West Point, Ga., Michael Griffin of Washington, D.C., Reginald J. Griffin of Tallahassee, Fla., Devin Griffin of Washington, D.C. and Michael F. Griffin of Columbus; one niece, Logan Griffin of Washington, D.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
